EMS Tragedy in Frio County, Texas

STRAC shared the following news regarding Camino Ambulance and Eagle Pass Fire Department (yesterday, September 15):

This afternoon a little after 1400 hours, Camino Real Ambulance had a crew returning from a transfer when they had a devastating accident in Frio County. The accident involved their ambulance and an 18-wheeler in what was described as a head-on collision at highway speed.
The EMT sitting in the passenger seat was seriously injured and was flown to BAMC by Methodist Air Care where he has been admitted with serious but non-life threatening injuries.

Unfortunately, the EMT that was driving the ambulance was killed in the accident along with the driver of the other vehicle. The EMT not only worked for Camino Real ambulance but was also a full-time firefighter with the Eagle Pass Fire Department. As devastating as this news can be on a family, it is compounded by the fact that the EMT’s mother died of COVID earlier this year.

Please keep Camino Real Ambulance and the Eagle Pass Fire Department in your thoughts and prayers over the next few days. More information will be shared with everyone as plans are made and needs are established. The San Antonio Fire Department will be transporting and escorting the firefighter back to Eagle Pass once all the investigation is concluded in Frio County.

September 16, 2021, update from STRAC:

The two crew members of Camino Real Ambulance that were involved in the fatal accident from yesterday have been identified.

EMT Sergio Munoz was the medic that was injured and flown to BAMC in serious condition.

ECA/Firefighter Matthew Fuentes (had just passed his EMT) was the medic that was killed in the accident.  Matthew was working his 2nd job with Camino Real Ambulance and is also employed full-time with the Eagle Pass Fire Department.

The Eagle Pass Firefighter Association has opened a Go Fund Me page for both of these medics to help their families manage expenses.  You can find the page here:  https://www.gofundme.com/f/sergio-munoz-matthew-fuentes?utm_source=customer&utm_medium=copy_link&utm_campaign=p_cf+share-flow-1

EMT Fuentes is being brought home to Eagle Pass this afternoon by the San Antonio Fire Department who is assisting Eagle Pass with this.
