Tactical Medics: Do I Need Them?
Steven Harvey

Tactical medic programs are becoming more and more common in communities across the state and across the country, especially as gun-related incidents increase. This session will discuss important topics such as:

  • What is the role of the tactical medic?
  • What training is required?
  • How do tactical medics work with law enforcement teams?
  • Are tactical medics commissioned law officers?
  • Lessons learned.

Steven Harvey is a paramedic and tactical medic who responds with the Bexar County Sheriff Office.  He leads the tactical medic program for Bexar County and provides tactical medic training for other agencies.

9:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m.

Leadership: The Impacts on Philosophy, Strategy & Character Virtues on Public Safety Recruitment, Retention & Department Sustainability
Kevin Deramus (Washington County EMS)

The short staffing scenarios that EMS agencies faced following the pandemic should not be about lowering expectations. Instead, EMS agencies are now clarifying their expectations for the future.

The presentation will look at the “Ideal Team Player” approach to recruitment and retention and demonstrate how a rural government agency has worked to retain employees.  It will focus on “Level 5” leadership, leadership styles and how an agency must identify “your department’s strategy” in order to attract the employees who can be successful in your agency.
